Fun and Historical Scala Activities to captivate and mesmorize you!

Walking Tours - Scala Activities!

Hiking is my personal favorites of the Scala Activities! Built in the heart of the Lattari Mountains, Scala enjoys the benefits of both hill and mountain. It overlooks two winding valleys, Ravello on one side, Amalfi and Atrani on the other, with a backdrop of the crystal blue sea.

Characteristic pathways and steps lead to seemingly endless chestnut and lemon groves, through unspoilt valleys and countryside where rare botanical specimens can be found. In the natural Reserve of the Valley of the Mills, the Woodwardia Radicans, unique in the whole of Europe has found a safe place to flourish. Furthermore, during the many walks through this marvellous scenery, tourists can visit churches, monuments, towers and castles, still bearing traces of their origins, in portals, balconies or fountains. Even the irrigation system used for the lemon groves is witness to the historic and cultural developments in the area

I am sure this will become a personal favorite of the Scala activities for you too!

Churches and Castles - Scala Activities

Scala is known for its many churches and noble houses; you can still see the remains of the antique walls that were built to defend the town.

The traces of the past can be seen in S. Caterina with its church of the same name, the city porch and the Chapel of S.Paolo or S.Maria della Porta.

At Campoleone the church of S. Pietro shows sculptures from the period of Angioino. However, the church was originally devoted to S.Angelo dello Spedale because of the hospidal found in 1320. At Campodonico is the church of S. Giovanni Battista dell'Acqua with a belltower characterized by the Arab style of architecture.

The cathedral of Scala has a medieval crypt which later was decorated in Baroque style. The tomb of the Angioinia Marinella Rufolo, a wooden cruxifix from the 8th century and a bishop's mitra from the same period are to be found in this church.

Amalfi built many towers and castles around its territory and some of those were above the town of Amalfi. It was protected to the northern by the castle of "Scala Maggiore", while on the southern by the castle of "Scalella". The town of Ravello was protected by the castle of "Sopramonte" and to the north by the castle of "Fratte". Between 1131 and 1135 the castle of "Scala Maggiore" was linked with the castle of "Fratta", began a strong protection for the town of Amalfi, Ravello, Scala and Atrani.

But only "Roberto il Guiscardo" (1073) and the Pisani (1135 and 1137) conquered the fortresses of Scala and Ravello, that obliged Amalfi to surrender.

The village of Scala is tiny - won't take long to see - basically the two main hotels, a couple of shops and the main square with the cathedral. The Cathedral, named after S.Lorenzo, is a large three-naved building, with XIX century floor and romanesque door. In the crypt apparently are some wooden sculptures of XIII century and a gothic tomb with stuccoworks.
