The Performing Arts

Because of the role Ravello plays in the field of classical music, The Ravello Concert Society is one of the city's main attractions. The Society puts on many concerts from March through November each year. The settings for the concerts are usually outdoors in one of the many beautiful gardens that exist in Ravello.

Sightseeing

Villa Cimbrone Gardens

Via Santa Chiara 26, Ravello, Italy Tel: 089-857-459 Activities: walking

Would highly recommend you visit the gardens in the last hour (open until 2000hrs as of Sep 13th) where there are no crowds and you can catch the beautiful sunsets from the Terrace of Infinity. Good thing to do pre-dinner or Villa Rufolo concert.

Villa Rufolo Piazza Duomo, Ravello, Italy Tel: 089-857-657

The Villa Rufolo was named for the patrician family who founded it in the 11th century. Once the residence of kings and popes, such as Hadrian IV, it's now remembered chiefly for its connection with Richard Wagner. He composed an act of Parsifal here in a setting he dubbed the "Garden of Klingsor." He also lived and composed at Palazzo Sasso . Boccaccio was so moved by the spot that he included it as background in one of his tales. The Moorish-influenced architecture evokes Granada's Alhambra, and the large tower was built in what's known as the "Norman-Sicilian" style. You can walk through the flower gardens leading to lookout points over the memorable coastline.

Duomo Duomo daily 9am-1pm and 5-7pm. Museum Easter-Oct daily 9am-1pm and 3-7pm Location: Piazza Duomo Prices: Duomo free admission; museum 2€ ($2.60)

It's unusual for such a small place to have a cathedral, but Ravello boasts one because it was once a major bishopric. The building dates from the 11th century, but its bronze doors are the work of Barisano da Trani and were crafted in 1179. Its campanile (bell tower) was erected in the 13th century. One of its major treasures is the pulpit of the Rufolo family, decorated with intricate mosaics and supported by spiral columns resting on the backs of half a dozen white marble lions. This is the work of Nicoló di Bartolomeo da Foggia in 1272. Another less intricate pulpit from 1130 features two large mosaics of Jonah being eaten and regurgitated by a dragonlike green whale. To the left of the altar is the Chapel of San Pantaleone (Cappella di San Pantaleone), the patron saint of Ravello to whom the cathedral is dedicated. His "unleakable" blood is preserved in a cracked vessel. The saint was beheaded at Nicomedia on July 27, A.D. 290. When Ravello holds a festival on that day every year, the saint's blood is said to liquefy. A museum of religious artifacts is also on-site (2€/$2.60 admission).

Festivals

Ravello's program of classical music starts in March and runs through late October. The Festivale Musicale di Ravello occurs in the latter part of July. International Orchestras and special guest stars perform many pieces by Wagner. For more information contact the Ravello Concert Society at 089 85 81 41 or www.ravelloarts. These concerts are held in the wonderful gardens of Villa Rufolo. You can also go to http://www.ravellofestival.com/new/index.php to find more information. They generally have 3-4 musical events each month in Ravello.

Walking

The Ravello-Minori Walk.
Walking along the Via Roma, you'll begin one of the loveliest walks to be had in Ravello, winding your way down to Minori between cottages and archways, terraced fields and the sea. As the whole way is a rather steep incline, it advisable to walk down from Ravello to Minori, and not vice versa. Once arriving in Minori, there are buses to carry you back to Ravello. Ahhh walking and hiking - two of my favorite things, I hopefully will be able to enjoy them both again real soon!

Shopping

Episcopio: don't leave Ravello without a bottle of the city's own white wine Episcopio! and pick up some limoncello too :)

The main square of Ravello is filled with little shops selling ceramics, limencino, and gelato and even a cute little jewelry store.

Convent

Santa Chiara

This is a strict enclosure convent built in a magnificent position, not far away from villa Cimbrone. You can only visit the atrium and the entrance where you find the gate and the Ruota (wheel) . The gate is used for the rare contacts between the nuns and the outer world, keeping the figure hidden, and the wheel is used to pass goods in and out from the convent.

The picture below is of the gate and wheel.

Transportation

There is hourly bus service between Amalfi and Ravello. This trip generally takes about a half an hour and goes thru some hairpin twists and turns. It is relatively cheap - 1 Euro for an hours ride.
