Minori and Maiori = Twin Towns Along the Amalfi Coast - Yours to Discover and Explore!

Minori

Minori has often been devastated by natural catastrophes and plagues: a tempest in 1597 was particularly terrible, it destroyed the walls and the main square. The Cathedral deserves a visit: it preserves S. Trofimena's relics , a saint venerated all along the Coast. A 17th-century marble pulpit is very remarkable. A wooden Baroque altar is interesting too, it is in the Church of S. Lucia at Benedictine Convent.

Like other major towns of the Amalfi Coast this town was founded by ancient roman aristocrats who chose the place for its beauty and mild climate, and built their luxurious villas here.

Minori soon started to produce paper, liquors and other lemon specialties, since lemons are a typical product of this area. This production is still a main activity of the town and is carried on with strict respect of the genuine local tradition.

If you come to Minori make sure you visit the ancient roman villa and the Basilica of Santa Trofimena, and the churchs of Santa Lucia, San Gennaro and San Michele as well, good examples of southern italian architecture.

The beautiful beach of Minori occupies the whole small bay comprised between the promontory which divides the town from Maiori and the opposite cape, all covered by the houses and novble palaces of the historic centre, with some fortified towers on the sea. In the middle of the beach there is a small quay built as landing point for hydrofoils. On its extremity towards the open sea there is a platform for the landing of helicopters. Behind the beach, the beautiful tree-lined promenade.

Maiori

Maiori was founded in the IX century by the prince of Salerno Sicardo with the name of " Rheginna Major " to distinguish it from Minori said " Rheginna Minor ". They had this name until the beginning of the Sveva domination, and then they lost the title " Rheginna ". This name came from two rivers, one big and one small, but the two towns took the name of Maiuri and Minuri. Maiori was under Amalfi control. It was sacked in 1268 by Pisa. It had a very good commercial navy and it was able to built very big ships. Maiori was decimated by the plague in 1656 and people were only 700, in 1852 they were 4891. The 26th of Ocyober 1954, Maiori was hit by a sea-quake. Maiori is between Minori and Tramonti. It was full of walls and towers, that were built from the IX century. On Ponticchio's hill you can see the ruins of S.Nicola Castle, built under Piccolomini in 1468, it costed to the town about 6000 ducats.

Maiori is a bathing resort on the biggest beach of the Amalfi coast.

Near Maiori, you can visit the monastic complex of “S.Maria de Olearia”; it was built in 973 by Benedictine and it is very important because contains the monastic rest of the Coast, from the middle age.

on the corsa reginna there are all kinds of shops and gift shops you can find clothes and all kinds of stuff for very cheap prices and including all this you get to see all the beautiful sites.

Gino's Bar Sirena is good for lunch or a drink. Gino's also sells bus tickets.
